Adapt-N Training Manual
Quick Facts about Adapt-N:
Adapt-N is an online tool that helps precisely manage nitrogen (N) inputs for grain, silage, and sweet corn production. It can provide automatic daily updates of each field’s N status and recommendations, based on real-time weather influences, and can be used with any device with internet access.
The tool uses a well-calibrated computer model, high resolution precipitation and temperature data, and soil, crop and management information to generate N recommendations for each management unit. It is a new approach for managing N for corn based on site-specific conditions. The web-based decision support tool (url: http://adapt-n.cals.cornell.edu) provides field-specific, locally-adjusted sidedress N recommendations for corn production that incorporate the effects of local early-season weather, as well as basic soil, management and crop information to generate N recommendations. By basing recommendations on local conditions, the tool improves the accuracy and precision of N recommendations, thus improving farm profits, while reducing environmental N losses. For more information on how recommendations are calculated, and additional info on N dynamics and losses the tools provides, please see Chapter 2 of our manual.
The Adapt-N tool has been under development for the past years with support largely from a USDA Special Grant on Computational Agriculture, as well as other sources. Available since 2009 and redesigned in 2010-11, it then field-tested at a large number of locations in Iowa and New York and some additional states in the 2011-2013 growing seasons.

Over the first years of the tool’s existence, interest in Adapt-N from growers, commercial partners, and non-profit partners has far outstripped our ability to meet those opportunities at Cornell. We are very pleased that Agronomic Technology Corporation (ATC) has taken on management of the Adapt-N interface, to sustain a vastly improved Adapt-N for 2014 and beyond. You can learn more about the partnership on our blog, and learn more about ATC at their website.
Adapt-N can be run from any device that has access to the internet. While it is probably easiest to enter your field data from a "real" computer, the Adapt-N tool can also be used from any smart phone, iPad, tablet computer or other mobile-enabled device. Especially once the data for each field are entered, it is easy to rerun the model to get an updated recommendation, or to simply check on your automatically updated recommendations for all fields.
The Adapt-N tool has been repeatedly upgraded over the years, based on user feedback and field trial data. We always value input from users – this is what helps us improve both the usability of the interface and the scientific accuracy with which the model is able to simulate actual mechanisms in the field. Below are details on upgrades that have been implemented.
